Environmental Matters
Safeguarding the Integrity of Creation
At St James, we are proud to have earned a Bronze EcoChurch Award for our efforts in environmental stewardship. We act within the broader umbrella of the Anglican Church, which has a strong commitment to environmental policy, recognising the importance of safeguarding creation and sustaining the earth as a core part of its mission.
We live in a time where there is significant environmental anxiety. But by taking actions we can both improve our environment and make positive change in the Earth that we've been blessed to inherit.
Our current initiatives at St James include:
-
Infrastructure Upgrades:
The church is the recipient of a Quick Wins grant for €2800 specifically to introduce eco lighting, insulate the hot water pipes, put in draught proofing, improve recycling (of materials from our regular refreshments), and install a “SMART” heating control system.
-
World Environment Day:
We are looking to support World Environment Day on 5th June 2025, which this year is about reducing plastic pollution. We are currently determining our activities & initiatives.
-
Cemetery Management & Garden Creation
The cemetery is a lovely plot of land with an impressive array of plants. We are currently introducing initiatives that facilitate the growth of native pollen-producing plants and herbs, providing food and nectar for the insects. This, in turn, supports swallows and other insect eating birds.
-
Children's Education
Weather permitting, we are looking to work with Children's Church Members who meet in the Well House each Sunday on building a, “rockery” garden. We believe that this will help our children grow up with a sense of ownership, and feel that they can make a difference in the word.
