About Us

We are an international English-speaking
Christian community with deep ties to Porto's history.

We are part of the Church of England, within the Archdeaconry of Gibraltar, which in turn is part of the Diocese in Europe. Our church lies in the heart of the beautiful city of Porto.

We extend a very warm welcome to Christians of all denominations, especially to members of the Portuguese community amongst whom we live.  We have a very diverse congregation, and all visitors are welcome to join us, whether they are pilgrims on Caminho, short stay tourists, expatriates, native Portuguese or longer term visitors.

Our Committes

Our Committees

There are many ways to become active in our church community. Reach out to an individual leader below.

The Choir

We have an active choir that practices half-an-hour prior to our 11.00 am Sunday services. We are not professionals and all are welcome.

Jonathan Ayerst, Director of Music

Environmental Committee

We are seeking a voluntary Local Environmental Officer to lead our "Caring for Creation" initiatives. In this role, you will inspire the congregation to reduce our carbon footprint and act as a vital link between the chaplaincy and the Diocese. If you are passionate about environmental stewardship, please contact the Churchwardens at churchwardens@stjamesporto.org or speak with Father Colin to learn more.

Children's Church

Our Children's Church meets every Sunday starting at 10.45 am in the Well House, and rejoins the service at 11.30 am.  All are welcome.

Cemetery Committee

The Committee is responsible for the general management of the cemetery, its grounds, the maintenance of registers of plots, the administration of reserved plots. In addition, the committee supervises the identification and listing of available plots for future reservation, the administration of headstones, the setting of cemetery fees, and the organization of individual and group visits to the cemetery.
